Print binding (book binding)
For producing books, a distinction is made between two main gluing operations: binding the pages together, the spine gluing, and finishing the pages on the inside and cover, the side gluing. A thermoplastic or PUR hot melt is used for the back gluing and EVA or PSA is used for the side gluing. For these two main steps in the process of binding a book, the most suitable adhesive products are highlighted below.
Backgluing
Back gluing can be done with thermoplastic hot melts such as the Accoflex 40-364, which provides a soft and flexible bond.

. Accoflex hot melt adhesive for packaging and bookbinding Accoflex is a thermoplastic rubber-based adhesive, which is characterized by the fact that the adhesive does not bind completely but remains permanently sticky. Therefore, a very good adhesive bond can be achieved even when cooled. The adhesive strength of Accoflex 40-364 is high. Back bonding is processed on a wide range of machines, for example from Müller Martini. Regardless of the diversity between these machines, Accoflex 40-364 runs well on every machine.
For excellent adhesion and higher temperature resistance, for example for special editions, back bonding can be done with PUR hot melt. Our product range includes Infinity PUR MP75, which is ideally suited for this application. However, this adhesive requires specific equipment specifically designed for PUR cartridges, such as the Infinity PUR 3000 glue gun. If you are relatively inexperienced with PUR hot melts, we recommend that you have our glue expert consult with you before placing an order to avoid production errors.
Side glues
Side gluing is possible with a dispersion adhesive. The side adhesive glues the cover of the book to the inside, joining the first and last pages or endpapers of the book. This is an essential step in the process of binding a book. The used adhesives for this step should have excellent processing properties, and thereby ensure good spine, side and end gluing. Side gluing provides the hinge effect when the book is opened or bent, and thus offers extra reinforcement. It also provides a luxurious looking book.
Hot-melt side glues can be applied by wheel gluing or spray heads. Depending on the material properties of the book you want to bind, we recommend using EVA or an self-adhesive PSA glue. EVA adhesive has better resistance to creep and is cleaner to handle. PSA, on the other hand, has a long open time, but is more heat creep sensitive and sometimes leaves a somewhat blotchy oily imprint on the paper. Ask our consultant for help in making the right adhesive choice to avoid connection problems.
