What is cyanoacrylate glue?<\/h2>\n

Cyanoacrylate is the active substance of superglue<\/strong>. It is the collective term for substances such as methyl-2-cyanoacrylate, ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate (in technical superglue) and 2-octyl-cyanoacrylate (in surgical tissue adhesives).<\/p>\n

Features<\/h3>\n

High performance cyanoacrylate formulas lead to the broad variety in viscosity<\/strong>, the possibility of non-tarnishing and to products with a low odor formula. Furthermore, these adhesives have a high resistance to temperature<\/strong>. The sustainability can differ per type and can be prolonged by storing the product in a cooled room, with a temperature of circa 5\u00baC. Gap-filling<\/strong> ranges cyanoacrylates are applicable at 0.015 cm up to 0.5 cm.<\/p>\n

Materials<\/h3>\n

The excellent performance and applicability of these adhesives lead to an optimal commitment<\/strong> when using the range. Our chemists have optimalised these products, so that they would perform perfectly on hard to glue materials<\/strong>, such as polypropylene, polyethylene, PTFE and other polyolefines.<\/p>\n

Other materials such as metal, rubber, composite, phenolic and silicon can also be connected. With porous materials<\/strong> there will be a product needed with a higher viscosity<\/strong>. This is needed to prevent the adhesive from being absorbed by the material because there is insufficient contact surface.<\/p>\n

How does cyanoacrylate works?<\/h2>\n

Polymerization reaction<\/h3>\n

In its fluid form, cyanoacrylate consists out of monomers<\/strong> of cyanoacrylate molecules. These undergo, under the influence of water vapor, a polymerization<\/strong> in which the acrylate hardens<\/strong> and a glued connection can be formed. This connection is created relatively quickly<\/strong>, which causes the nickname of superglue!<\/p>\n

Since there is moist<\/strong> on the skin, the contact between superglue and skin will also bring out a polymerization reaction<\/strong>. Therefore it is recommended to avoid contact<\/strong> with the skin while working with this adhesive. You can do this by wearing working-gloves, for instance.<\/p>\n

High temperature resistance<\/h3>\n

The temperature resistance<\/strong> varies from -60\u00b0C up to +260\u00b0C. To reach the maximum application temperature<\/strong>, a second warmth-hardening<\/strong> process is necessary. The full strength will be reached at room temperature<\/strong> within 24 hours<\/strong> in general.<\/p>\n

Use of an activator<\/h3>\n

Cyanoacrylates are developed to react on small amounts of surface moisture<\/strong> and can harden quick<\/strong> at room temperature without an oven or any tools. An activator<\/strong> can be used in case of unfavorable circumstances<\/strong>, such as dry air and low temperatures. When this occurs, it is enough to just spray<\/strong> the activator on the exposed adhesive.<\/p>\n

Because not all applications require the glue to be at both the surfaces, the activator is developed to use with single-sided<\/strong> glue. In some cases there will be a thin layer of superglue applied on a small wooden object to make this shine and protect<\/strong> it. This is a common method with making luscious wooden ballpoint and fountain pen.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, a pre-treatment with CSA<\/strong> (surface activator) can provide better results when adhesives are used on acidic<\/strong> or porous<\/strong> surfaces. The application of CSA afterwards<\/strong> can also speed up<\/strong> the hardening process or prevents<\/strong> the phenomenon of forming white film<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
